Trump unfit to serve as president: Obama

President Barack Obama has issued a scathing attack of Donald Trump forcriticising a Muslim family whose US Army captain son was killed in Iraq, andchallenged Republican leaders to withdraw support for their "unfit"nominee.

Obama's comments on Tuesday added to a growing number of statementsfrom Republicans and Democrats lambasting Trump for his criticism of Khizr andGhazala Khan, who appeared at the Democratic National Convention last week.

Trump questioned whether Mrs Khan did not speak at the conventionbecause she was prevented from doing so by her religion and he characterised MrKhan's criticism of him as "vicious".

Families who lose sons or daughters who serve in the US military arecalled Gold Star families.

"The notion that he would attack a Gold Star family that had madesuch extraordinary sacrifices on behalf of our country, the fact that hedoesn't appear to have basic knowledge around critical issues in Europe, in theMiddle East, in Asia means that he's woefully unprepared to do this job,"Obama said of Trump during a White House news conference.

The Democratic president noted that leading Republicans, includingSpeaker of the House of Representatives Paul Ryan, Senate Republican leaderMitch McConnell, and one-time Republican presidential nominee John McCain, a USsenator from Arizona, had criticised Trump for his remarks but have stood bytheir endorsements of him.

"The question I think that they have to ask themselves is, if youare repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said isunacceptable, why are you still endorsing him?" Obama said.

"What does this say about your party that this is yourstandard-bearer?"

Trump quickly hit back at the president and Clinton, whom he often saysis running for Obama's third term, as embracing policies that have destabilisedthe Middle East, hurt veterans and shipped American jobs overseas.

"They have betrayed our security and our workers, and HillaryClinton has proven herself unfit to serve in any government office," Trumpsaid in a statement.

Obama has endorsed his former secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, theDemocratic nominee for president.

Obama said that even if he had lost his White House races in 2008 toMcCain and in 2012 to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, he would nothave doubted their abilities to lead the country.

"There has to come a point at which you say, somebody who makesthose kinds of statements doesn't have the judgment, the temperament, theunderstanding to occupy the most powerful position in the world," Obamasaid.
