Woman posts photo of Dutch Bros. workers' act of kindness

VANCOUVER, Wash. A photo of three employees at a Vancouver Dutch Bros. coffee stand praying with a customer is going viral on Facebook.

A woman named Barbara Danner posted the photo on Saturday. In the caption she writes that she snapped the picture while waiting in line at the coffee shop on 138th Avenue in Vancouver.

Danner said that the woman in the car ahead of her had just lost her husband the night before, and that's when the Dutch Bros. employees noticed the woman was upset. They then "stopped everything to pray with her."

"She got to the window and explained what happened, how her husband passed away," Peirce Dunn, a Dutch Bros. employee, said.

Without hesitation, the crew stopped and together they prayed over the woman.

"We just love people. Anytime we see someone sad or mournful it takes five minutes to make their week make their life. It's a small price to pay," Dunn said.

Their prayers had one goal.

"We are going to give you that love we are going to make you feel the joy that you felt once before. It's in this world and it surrounds you," Evan Freeman said.

Evan Freeman, also a Dutch Bros. employee, and Dunn are in the photo. They describe Dutch Bros. as a place that is about more than just coffee.

"It kind of happened, it just looked like that's what she needed," Dunn said.

"This is us being normal, this is what we do and we are not trying to get attention for it," Freeman said.

Even now, four days later the crew still has the woman on their mind.

"I hope that she is starting to find some solid ground, because when I saw her face it looked like her entire floor got ripped from under her and she was falling," Freeman said.

By Tuesday afternoon, Danner's post had been shared thousands of times, with many people writing about their own stories of thoughtful Dutch Bros. employees in the comments.

Discussion:
1. Why do you think acts of kindness are going viral on media outlets these days?

2. Most acts of kindness that are going viral are usually snapped inside well-known business establishments. Do you think it is, in a way, a marketing strategy for them to gain more recognition thus gaining more customers? Why or why not?
3. How do you spot genuine kindness?
4. What might cause some people to "pretend" to be a kind person?
5. Do you think a person's act of kindness can inspire anyone to do the same? Why or why not?
