Between 2006 and 2010, an average 178 people leapt to potential death off one of the Han River bridges per year. This translates into a suicide attempt almost every other day over the last five years.

The total number of people who jumped was 892 over the past five years and of them 375 people died, according to a report by Seoul Metropolitan Government to Rep. Kim Choong-joh of the main opposition Democratic Party Monday.

In 2010, the number of people who attempted suicide from bridges stood at 193, compared to 210 in 2009 and 155 in 2006.

Mapo Bridge was the most popular at 113 out of 892, followed by Hangang Bridge with 81, Wonhyo Bridge with 62, Seogang 54, and 45 jumping off Seongsan. There are 24 bridges on the Han River.

Out of the total 892, 517 were rescued.

“Although sometimes we receive reports immediately after someone has jumped, in many cases, the reports come in only after the dead bodies are found,” an official from the fire department said.

5년간 892명 투신…마포ㆍ한강대교 많아

한강 다리에서 투신하는 사건이 이틀에 한번꼴로 발생하고 있는 것으로 집계됐다.

26일 국회 행정안전위원회 김충조(민주당) 의원이 서울시로부터 제출받은 자료에 따르면 2006년부터 2010년까지 지난 5년간 한강에 투신한 사람은 모두 892명으로 이중 375명이 숨졌다.

한강에 몸을 던진 사람들은 2006년 155명, 2007년 169명, 2008년 165명, 2009년 210명, 2010년 193명으로 계속 100명 이상을 기록했다. 연평균 178명으로 이틀에 한번 투신자가 나오는 셈이다.

투신이 가장 빈번한 곳은 마포대교로 892명 중 12.7％인 113명이 뛰어내렸고 한강대교(81명, 9.1％), 원효대교(62명, 7％), 서강대교(54명, 6.1％), 성산대교(45명, 5％) 등 순이다.

한강의 주요 다리는 대교와 철교 등을 포함해 모두 24개이며 강동대교는 2007년에 3명이 뛰어내린 것이 전부로 제일 투신자가 적었다.

최근 5년간 광진 수난구조대에서 293명, 영등포 수난구조대에서 599명의 투신 신고가 접수됐고 사망 375명을 제외한 517명을 구조했다.

서울시 소방재난본부 관계자는 "뛰어내리고 나서 바로 신고가 들어오는 경우도 있지만 많은 경우 시신일 때 발견돼 늦게 신고되는 일이 많다"고 말했다.

현재 광진 구조대에는 22명, 영등포 구조대에는 17명의 구조 요원들이 대기하고 있으며 이들의 인건비와 구조대 유지관리비, 장비구매 등에 연간 20억5천777만원이 투입되고 있다.(연합)
