  • (4/18) Bees like playing with balls, study finds
AUDIO(Slow) AUDIO(Normal) Bees like playing with balls, study finds Everyone knows that bees are busy. There is even a saying in English that one can be "as busy as a bee". However, little is known about how bees play. Scientists have discovered one way that bees could relax after a busy day making honey - they play with balls. The scientists are from Queen Mary University of London. They did different tests on bees "playing" with different things. The insects particularly liked playing with small, wooden balls. The researchers said the way bees played was a little like how humans play. Younger bees rolled more balls than older bees, while adult males spent longer playing with balls than adult females. The ball-rolling bees are the first known insects to "play". The researchers experimented on 45 bumblebees in a specially designed test area. The bees were given two options. The first choice was to fly or walk directly to get a sugary treat. The second choice was to get to the treat by going around different coloured wooden balls. Most of the bees decided to play with the balls and then get their treat. A researcher said the experiments showed that bees are more thoughtful than people believed. She said: "Bees are a million miles from the mindless, unfeeling creatures they are traditionally believed to be." She added that: "This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more sophisticated than we might imagine."   - Chat Talk about these words from the article.    bees / busy / English / relax / honey / scientists / balls / insects / humans / adults / researchers / test / choice /        fly / walk / treat / experiments / a million miles / minds   - Discussion 1) What did you think when you read the headline? 2) What images are in your mind when you hear the word 'bee'? 3) What do you know about bees? 4) How busy are you at the moment? 5) How do you think bees might play? 6) Do you think other insects play? 7) What do you think of honey? 8) What ball games do you like to play? 9) What are the benefits of bees? 10) How do you relax after a busy day?

  • (4/17) Your soap might mean mosquitoes bite you more
AUDIO(Slow) AUDIO(Normal) Your soap might mean mosquitoes bite you more Mosquitoes seem to like some people more than others. Scientists from the Virginia Tech university in the USA believe the smell of our body could attract mosquitoes. This includes our natural body odour and smells from soaps and perfumes. Some of these smells could also help to reduce the number of bites we get in the summer. The researchers said mosquitoes seemed to prefer soap with a flowery smell. The lead researcher said over 60 per cent of the smells coming from our body come from soap rather than natural body odours. He said that changing the soap we use could change how attractive we are to mosquitoes. Soap with a neutral or no smell could make us less tasty to the creatures. The researchers tested the effects on mosquitoes of four popular brands of soap. They analyzed the smell of different people after they used each soap, and when they did not wash themselves. The researchers recreated the soapy and unwashed smells and put them in two different cups in a cage full of mosquitoes. The insects seemed to prefer the flowery smells from the soapy cups. Mosquitoes may be like humans because they are attracted by floral and fruity smells. One researcher gave some advice. He said: "I would choose a coconut-scented soap if I wanted to reduce mosquito attraction." Mosquitoes are the world's deadliest creatures. The diseases they carry kill about 725,000 people a year.   - Chat Talk about these words from the article.     mosquitoes / smell / body odour / soap / perfume / summer / bites / attractive / tasty / popular brands / wash /       soapy / cage / fruity smells / coconut / creatures / diseases   - Discussion 1) What did you think when you read the headline? 2) What images are in your mind when you hear the word 'soap'? 3) What do you think of mosquitoes? 4) How much do mosquitoes like you? 5) What are your favourite smells? 6) What soaps and perfumes or fragrances do you like? 7) What do you think of body odour? 8) What three adjectives best describe mosquitoes? 9) What's the best way to treat a mosquito bite? 10) Will you now try different soaps?

  • (4/16) Grapes are good for our eyesight
AUDIO(Slow) AUDIO(Normal) Grapes are good for our eyesight Everybody knows that eating carrots is good for our eyesight. A new study suggests that grapes are also good for our eyes. Researchers from the National University of Singapore have found that eating just a few grapes a day can improve our vision. This is especially so for people who are older. Dr Eun Kim, the lead researcher, said: "Our study is the first to show that grape consumption beneficially impacts eye health in humans, which is very exciting, especially with a growing, ageing population." Dr Kim added that, "grapes are an easily accessible fruit that studies have shown can have a beneficial impact" on our eyesight. This is good news for people who don't really like carrots. The study is published in the journal "Food & Function". Thirty-four adults took part in a series of experiments over 16 weeks. Half of the participants ate one-and-a-half cups of grapes per day; the other half ate a placebo snack. Dr Kim did not tell the participants or the researchers whether she was testing the grapes or the snack. She thought that not revealing this information would give better test results. She found that people who ate the grapes had improved muscle strength around the retina. The retina passes information about light to the brain via electrical signals. It protects the eyes from damaging blue light. A lot of blue light comes from computer and smartphone screens, and from LED lights.   - Chat Talk about these words from the article.   carrots / eyesight / grapes / vision / older people / researcher / health / humans / study / journal / experiment /        snack / information / muscle / strength / blue / light   - Discussion 1) What did you think when you read the headline? 2) What images are in your mind when you hear the word 'grape'? 3) How healthy are carrots? 4) What can we do to take care of our eyes? 5) What's your eyesight like? 6) Will you now eat more grapes? 7) What other food is good for our eyes? 8) What do you know about blue light? 9) What is your favourite fruit and why? 10) What happens to our eyes as we age?
